We discussed deaf education many times in Deaf Sociology class. We were talking about how children have to face the unpleasant reality of the system, but what about teachers? As the article shows “Deaf education continues to be dominated by White, hearing, female professionals. Given that K-12 deaf students of color represent almost 50% of the school-age population, the need for diversified teachers and administrators is evident.” On the other hand, “the Deaf community shares characteristics of other oppressed minorities. For instance, many of its members are undereducated (many of these individuals exit high school with a certificate of attendance rather than a diploma) and underemployed, and experience inequalities regarding race, gender, and socioeconomic status.”
